Wafer Check Valve: Types, Sizing & Selection Guide (2026)
A wafer check valve (also called a non-return valve) prevents backflow in your piping system — it lets fluid flow one way and closes automatically if flow reverses. But there are two main types: single plate (silent) and dual plate (dual disc). Which one do you need? As a valve manufacturer with 20+ years of experience, we’ll break down the differences, sizing rules, and common mistakes when buying wafer check valves.
1. What Is a Wafer Check Valve?
A wafer check valve is a compact, automatic valve that allows flow in only one direction. It has no actuator — it opens when upstream pressure pushes the disc open, and closes automatically when flow stops or reverses. The “wafer” design means it’s thin and designed to be sandwiched between two pipe flanges.
There are two main types of wafer check valves, each with different performance characteristics:
| Feature | Single Plate (Silent Check) | Dual Plate (Dual Disc) |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Single disc on a hinge, spring-loaded | Two half-discs that open like a book |
| Closing Speed | Fast (spring-assisted) — prevents water hammer | Medium (gravity/spring assisted) |
| Noise Level | Quiet (“silent” check) | Louder (disc slams shut) |
| Pressure Drop | Higher (disc blocks more flow) | Lower (two discs open fully) |
| Size Range | DN25 – DN300 (1″ – 12″) | DN50 – DN600 (2″ – 24″)+ |
| Price | More expensive | Cheaper (especially large sizes) |
| Best For | Pump discharge, low flow, quiet operation | Large pipelines, water treatment, HVAC |
2. Where Are Wafer Check Valves Used?
| Application | Recommended Type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pump discharge (water) | Single plate (silent) | Fast closing prevents water hammer when pump stops |
| HVAC chilled water | Single plate (silent) | Quiet operation, prevents backflow between floors |
| Large diameter pipelines (10″+) | Dual plate | Much cheaper and lighter than single plate in large sizes |
| Water treatment plants | Dual plate | Cost-effective for large flows, low pressure drop |
| Steam systems | Single plate (high temp) | Fast closing prevents water hammer in steam lines |
| Compressed air systems | Dual plate or single plate | Prevents backflow between compressor stations |
3. Body & Disc Materials
| Medium / Environment | Body Material | Disc Material | Seat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean water, HVAC | Ductile iron / WCB | Stainless 304 | NBR / EPDM |
| Corrosive chemicals, coastal | CF8 / CF8M (304/316SS) | CF8M (316SS) | EPDM / PTFE |
| Oil, fuel, hydrocarbons | WCB (carbon steel) | Stainless 304 / coated | NBR / Viton |
| Steam, high temp | WCB / CF8M | Stainless 304/316 | Graphite / PTFE (high temp) |
4. Sizing: Common Mistakes
Sizing a wafer check valve is not the same as sizing a control valve. Here are the rules:
Rule 1: The check valve should be the same size as the pipe. Don’t undersize a check valve to “increase velocity” — this creates excessive pressure drop and noise. Use a wafer check valve that matches the pipe diameter.
Rule 2: Minimum cracking pressure matters. A check valve needs a certain amount of upstream pressure to open. If your flow velocity is too low, the valve won’t open fully and will rattle. For pump discharge, use a spring-loaded single plate check that opens at low pressure.
Rule 3: Install in the right orientation. Wafer check valves have an arrow showing flow direction. Single plate silent checks must be installed horizontally (or within 5° of horizontal) — if installed vertically with flow going up, the disc won’t close properly.
Rule 4: Leave space for maintenance. Even though wafer checks are compact, leave enough straight pipe before and after the valve (5x diameter upstream, 2x downstream) for proper operation.
5. Single Plate vs Dual Plate: Which One Should You Choose?
Choose single plate (silent) if:
• It’s for pump discharge (prevents water hammer)
• Size is under 8″ (DN200)
• Quiet operation is important (HVAC, buildings)
• Flow is intermittent (needs fast closing)
• You have low flow velocity (needs spring assistance)
Choose dual plate if:
• Size is 6″ (DN150) or larger (big cost savings)
• Continuous flow in a large pipeline
• Low pressure drop is important
• It’s a water treatment plant or municipal water line
• Budget is tight and you don’t need silent operation
6. Common Problems & How to Fix Them
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Loud banging / water hammer | Disc slams shut when pump stops | Replace with spring-loaded single plate silent check |
| Valve chatters / vibrates | Flow too low, disc doesn’t open fully | Use lighter spring, or smaller check valve size |
| Leaks when closed | Debris caught between disc and seat | Remove and clean, or install a Y-strainer upstream |
| High pressure drop | Valve is undersized, or wrong type | Use dual plate instead of single plate, or size up |
| Disc doesn’t close fully | Installed vertically (flow up) on a single plate | Install horizontally, or use dual plate (works in any orientation) |
7. Buying Checklist
When you send an RFQ for a wafer check valve, include these:
• Size (DN / inch)
• Pressure rating (PN / Class)
• Medium (water, oil, steam, chemical)
• Required type (single plate silent / dual plate)
• Body and disc material
• Seat / gasket material
• End connection standard (EN1092 / ASME B16.5 / JIS)
• Standard (API 594 / EN 12334 / ASME B16.34)
