What is the 3A Sanitary Standard? Explained for Buyers

Sanitary Ball Valve

The 3A sanitary standard is the most widely recognized certification for equipment used in food, beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical processing in North America. Products that meet 3A standards are designed for cleanability, minimizing the risk of product contamination.

Key Requirements

3A certified valves and fittings use smooth, crevice-free internal surfaces (Ra ≤0.8μm), FDA-compliant elastomers, and designs that allow full CIP (clean-in-place) and SIP (sterilization-in-place) cleaning without disassembly. If you are exporting sanitary valves to the US or Canada, 3A certification is almost always required.
