Flanged cast steel globe valve straight pattern - Chuanglan Valve

A flanged globe valve is a linear motion valve designed for throttling and regulating flow. Its disc and seat are perpendicular to the pipeline axis, providing better control accuracy and tighter shut-off than gate valves — ideal for steam, oil and high-pressure applications.

Chuanglan manufactures straight pattern and Y-type flanged globe valves in CF8M (316) and CF8 (304) stainless steel as standard range. WCB cast carbon steel is available for oil/gas and high-temperature steam service. Sizes DN15–DN200 (1/2″–8″), flanged ends per DIN EN 1092-1 PN16 / ANSI B16.5 Class 150 / JIS 10K. For on/off isolation, compare our rising stem gate valve; for quarter-turn shutoff, see our flanged ball valve.

The main advantage of a globe valve over a gate valve is superior throttling capability. Unlike gate valves which are designed for fully open or fully closed service, globe valves can regulate flow at any intermediate position with stable, repeatable performance. The Y-type pattern reduces pressure drop and is preferred for viscous fluids and slurry, while the straight pattern is more compact and economical for general service. We directly serve EPC contractors and valve distributors in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam) and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait).

When selecting a flanged globe valve, consider: size (DN15–DN200), pressure rating (PN16 / ANSI 150# / PN40 / ANSI 300#), body pattern (straight for general service, Y-type for low pressure drop, angle type for elbow installation), body material (WCB for oil/gas, CF8 for general chemical, CF8M for corrosive service), trim material (Stellite for high-temperature/abrasive, SS13Cr for general, PTFE for corrosive), and options (gear operator for large sizes, electric/pneumatic actuator for automation, bellows seal for toxic/hazardous service). In pump discharge and condenser bypass, pair with a swing check valve; protect the valve body from pipe debris with a Y-strainer.

🌏 Southeast Asia & Middle East Market Notes

Saudi Arabia & UAE refineries / petrochemical: WCB body, Stellite 6 trim, graphite spiral-wound gasket, bolted bonnet — standard for saturated steam and hot oil bypass. ATEX electric actuator option for modulating control.

Indonesia & Malaysia palm oil mills: Y-type pattern for viscous CPO (crude palm oil) and sterilizer condensate — reduces pressure drop and prevents seat erosion from high-fiber slurry.

Vietnam & Thailand power plants / sugar mills: CF8 body, PN16 DIN flanges, handwheel operated — standard for cooling water, condensate return and chemical dosing lines.

Worked Example: Selecting a DN80 Globe Valve for a Steam Desuperheater Bypass

Project: Saturated steam desuperheater bypass valve at a 200 t/h sugar mill in Khon Kaen, Thailand.
Given: DN80 (3″) globe valve, saturated steam at 16 bar / 200°C, PN16 DIN flange, modulating control required, handwheel backup.

Step 1 — Body material selection:
Saturated steam at 200°C — CF8M (316) not required. WCB (ASTM A216) with Stellite 6 trim is the standard and most economical choice for steam service to 425°C.

Step 2 — Body pattern selection:
Desuperheater bypass requires precise throttling of steam. Straight pattern globe valve is correct (Y-type would lower pressure drop but we need high resistance for control range). Pressure drop across the valve is designed to be 2–3 bar.

Step 3 — Flange standard:
End user specified DIN EN 1092-1 PN16 drilled flanges: D=200 mm, K=160 mm, 8×Φ18 bolt holes, raised face d=138 mm, c=18 mm. Face-to-face L=310 mm (BS 1873 long pattern).

Step 4 — Trim & actuation:
Stellite 6 disc and seat (resists wire-drawing from high-velocity steam). Graphite spiral-wound gasket for 200°C. Mounted with pneumatic diaphragm actuator + 4-20mA positioner for modulating control, retaining handwheel for manual backup.

4 Common Mistakes When Selecting Globe Valves

Mistake 1 — Installing a globe valve backwards (flow direction): Globe valves are unidirectional — flow must enter under the disc (bottom-to-top). Installing backwards causes seat erosion and poor control. Mark the flow arrow on the body.

Mistake 2 — Using PTFE seat on steam service: PTFE max temperature is ~200°C. For saturated steam above 200°C or superheated steam, specify Stellite / alloy trim with graphite gasket. PTFE will cold-flow and leak.

Mistake 3 — Specifying straight pattern for viscous/slurry service: Straight globe valves have a sharp turn that traps slurry and viscous fluids. For palm oil, pulp, sludge, specify Y-type pattern to reduce fouling and pressure drop.

Mistake 4 — Using WCB body for seawater / chlorinated service: WCB carbon steel corrodes in chloride environments. For desalination, cooling towers with chlorinated water, or coastal service, specify CF8M (316) body.

FAQ

What is the difference between a globe valve and a gate valve?

Gate valves are for fully open or fully closed on/off service — very low pressure drop, but poor throttling. Globe valves are designed for throttling and regulating flow at any position, with tighter shut-off and better control accuracy, but higher pressure drop. Use globe for regulation, gate for isolation.

Straight pattern or Y-type globe valve — which one should I choose?

Straight pattern is more compact, lower cost, standard for water, steam and oil. Y-type (oblique) has a 45° angled flow path, reducing pressure drop up to 30% and minimizing seat erosion — preferred for viscous fluids, slurry, pulp and high-velocity applications.

Can a globe valve be used for steam service?

Yes — globe valves are the standard choice for steam lines. With graphite gaskets, Stellite trim and pressure-seal bonnets, they handle saturated steam up to 425°C (WCB). Gate valves are not recommended for throttling steam.

What is a bellows-seal globe valve and when is it required?

Bellows-seal valves replace stem packing with a welded metal bellows, eliminating stem leakage entirely. They are mandatory for toxic, flammable, radioactive or ultra-pure media (chemical, nuclear, semiconductor) where even trace emissions are unacceptable.

Can you automate this valve with a pneumatic or electric actuator?

Yes. We offer pneumatic diaphragm / piston actuators and electric actuators with positioners (4-20mA) for modulating control. The standard handwheel remains as manual override for emergency operation. See our actuated ball valve for quarter-turn automation.

Does flow direction matter on a globe valve?

Yes. Globe valves are unidirectional — flow must enter under the disc (bottom-to-top) for proper sealing and control. The body has a flow arrow. Installing backwards causes seat erosion, noise and poor control range.

What is the MOQ and delivery time for flanged globe valves?

MOQ starts at 1 piece. Standard sizes (DN15–DN50) in WCB are usually in stock. Larger sizes (DN65+), CF8M or special trims take 15–30 days depending on quantity.

What is the warranty period for your valves?

We provide a 12-month warranty after shipment for material and manufacturing defects. This covers casting defects, seal leakage and material non-conformance. Damage from misuse, improper installation or corrosion beyond specified limits is not covered.
