Stainless Steel Pipe: Seamless vs Welded, Schedule & Selection Guide (2026)

Stainless Steel Pipe: Seamless vs Welded, Schedule & Selection Guide (2026)

Stainless steel pipe is the backbone of any stainless steel piping system — but there are so many choices: seamless vs welded, 304 vs 316L, Schedule 10S vs 40S vs 80S, polished vs pickled… As a stainless steel pipe and valve manufacturer with 20+ years of experience, we’ll break down everything you need to know to choose the right stainless steel pipe for your project.

Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe

1. Seamless vs Welded: What’s the Difference?

This is the first choice you need to make when buying stainless steel pipe. Seamless and welded pipes look the same on the outside, but they’re made differently and have different cost/performance characteristics.

Feature Seamless Pipe (SMLS) Welded Pipe (ERW / Welded)
Manufacturing Process Extruded from a solid billet, no weld seam Rolled from a sheet/plate, then welded along the seam
Pressure Rating Higher (up to Class 2500) Lower (usually up to Class 600)
Price Expensive (30-50% more than welded) Cheaper
Size Range Up to ~12″ (larger sizes are welded) 1/2″ up to 48″+
Availability Longer lead time (custom sizes) Readily available, standard sizes in stock
Best For High pressure, high temperature, oil & gas, critical service General industry, water, HVAC, food, chemical (low-medium pressure)

Rule of thumb: For most general industrial, water, HVAC, and food applications, welded pipe is perfectly fine and much cheaper. Use seamless only for high pressure (Class 600+), high temperature, or critical oil & gas service where the weld seam would be a weak point.

2. Material Grades: 304 vs 304L vs 316 vs 316L

Grade Chemical Content Corrosion Resistance Price Best For
304 18% Cr, 8% Ni Good (general corrosion) Medium General industry, water, food, chemical (non-chloride)
304L Low carbon version of 304 Same as 304, better weldability Slightly more than 304 Welded piping systems (no post-weld heat treatment needed)
316 16% Cr, 10% Ni, 2% Mo Excellent (chloride resistance) More expensive Coastal, saltwater, chloride-containing chemicals, pharma
316L Low carbon version of 316 Same as 316, better weldability Most expensive Welded systems in corrosive service, food/pharma

Most common choice: 304 for general industry (70% of applications). 316L for coastal, saltwater, or corrosive chemicals. Always specify whether you need 304 or 316 — they look the same but cost 30-50% different.

3. Schedule (Wall Thickness) Selection

Pipe schedule is the wall thickness of the pipe. Higher schedule = thicker wall = higher pressure rating.

Schedule Wall Thickness (for 2″ pipe) Pressure Rating Best For
Schedule 10S 1.65 mm Low (PN10 max) Sanitary, food, thin wall, low pressure, decorative
Schedule 40S / 40 3.91 mm Medium (PN40 / Class 300) Most common, general industry, water, oil
Schedule 80S / 80 5.54 mm High (PN100 / Class 600) High pressure, oil & gas, steam
Schedule 160 8.74 mm Very high (Class 900+) Extreme pressure, special applications

Most common: Schedule 40 for general industrial use (70% of applications). Schedule 10S for sanitary/food. Schedule 80 for high pressure/oil & gas.

4. Surface Finish Options

Surface Finish Description Best For
Pickled & Passivated Matte grey, chemically cleaned (most common) General industry, chemical, oil & gas
Annealed (Bright Annealed / BA) Shiny silver, bright annealed in vacuum Food, beverage, pharma, decorative
Electropolished (EP) Mirror finish, Ra ≤ 0.4 μm Pharma, biotech, ultra-pure water, hygienic
Polished (Mechanical) Mechanically polished to a shine Decorative, architecture, food

5. Common Standards

Standard Region What It Covers
ASTM A312 / ASME SA312 USA / International Seamless and welded stainless steel pipe for high temperature service
ASTM A358 USA Electric-fusion-welded stainless steel pipe for high temperature
EN 10216-5 Europe European seamless stainless steel tube for pressure purposes
EN 10217-7 Europe European welded stainless steel tube for pressure purposes
JIS G3459 Japan Japanese stainless steel pipe for piping

6. Common Applications

• **Oil & gas** — upstream, midstream, downstream, refineries
• **Chemical processing** — corrosive chemicals, acids, solvents
• **Water & wastewater** — treatment plants, distribution networks
• **Food & beverage** — dairy, beer, juice, processed food
• **Pharmaceutical & biotech** — drug production, WFI systems

7. Buying Checklist

When you send an RFQ for stainless steel pipe, include:

• Size (NPS / DN, outer diameter and wall thickness)
• Schedule / wall thickness (S10 / S40 / S80)
• Material grade (304 / 304L / 316 / 316L)
• Type (seamless / welded)
• Surface finish (pickled / annealed / electropolished / polished)
• Standard (ASTM A312 / EN 10216 / JIS G3459)
• Length (6m / 12m / custom)
• Quantity (meters / pieces / tons)
• Required certification (MTC / EN 10204 3.1)
